Multi-instrumentalist Dan Dugmore has mastered several string instruments, but he is best known as one of the world’s premier pedal steel guitarists. A Southern California native, Dugmore credits Rusty Young’s pedal steel work on the Buffalo Springfield song “Kind Woman” for inspiring him to learn the instrument. He bought his first pedal steel from Sneaky Pete Kleinow of the Flying Burrito Brothers after the band played a gig at the Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood. Dugmore quickly established himself, becoming the go-to pedal steel player for Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor for more than a decade while working with everyone from Stevie Nicks to the Pointer Sisters to Warren Zevon. After he was hired to work on a Matraca Berg album in Nashville, Dugmore relocated to Tennessee in 1990 and has added his signature sound to hundreds of hits by Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill, George Jones, Toby Keith, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, Tim McGraw, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Randy Travis, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, and Trisha Yearwood. This interview will be moderated by the Museum’s Michael McCall and will be illustrated with vintage photos, film, and recordings. Dugmore will sign commemorative Hatch Show Print posters following the program. Offered in support of the exhibition Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock, presented by City National Bank. Program made possible in part by the Academy of Country Music. Ford Theater. Included with Museum admission. Program ticket required. Free to Museum members.
