One of Black’s first jobs was selling newspaper subscriptions to the Houston Post. In 1978, he received this trophy when he took second place over 200 competitors in the daily paper’s annual Top Salesman contest.

Gibson J-40 guitar

When Black was 15, his parents gave him his first quality guitar, a Gibson J-40 acoustic model. A few years later, he came home after playing a gig to find his Houston apartment had been burglarized and the beloved Gibson stolen. The model was discontinued in 1981, but Gibson custom-built this J-40 for Black in 1990, to replace the one that had been his prized possession.

Worn onstage by Black, this is one of the custom-made, black felt cowboy hats that are an inseparable part of his image. The title of his classic 1989 hit “Killin’ Time” is stamped onto the lining of this hat made by Standard Hat Works in Waco, Texas.

In the summer of 1991, Black’s musical hero Merle Haggard honored him by appearing as a special guest on Black’s headlining tour. One night, Haggard came into Black’s dressing room and played him fragments of a new song. Black offered to help him finish it and wrote additional lyrics on the back of this page from his tour itinerary. Titled “Untanglin’ My Mind,” the song became a Top Five country hit for Black in 1994 and was recorded by Haggard two years later.

Director’s chair

Black began directing his own music videos in the 1990s. He used this director’s chair while shooting the video for his song “Summer’s Comin’,” a #1 hit in 1995. The video features actor Harvey Mandel in the leading role, along with Lisa Hartman Black and cameo appearances by celebrities such as David Hasselhoff, George Kennedy, Jay Leno and Nashville radio and television host Charlie Chase.

“Like the Rain” handwritten lyrics

This is a draft of handwritten lyrics by Black for his chart-topping 1996 single “Like the Rain.” Using the working title “I Never Liked the Rain,” this manuscript includes some different lyrics to the version he recorded. Like nearly all his songs and biggest hits, Black co-wrote the song with his friend and longtime bandmate, guitarist Hayden Nicholas.

Comedian and actor Gary Shandling, star of HBO’s “Larry Sanders Show,” invited his good friend Black to appear in the program’s final episode in 1998. The cast signed this copy of the script for Black, including rocker Tom Petty. The two musicians staged a fight scene in the episode, with Petty calling Black “Roy Rogers.”

Lisa Hartman Black wore this Brides International dress, with floral embroidery and tulle skirt and shawl, in the music video for “When I Said I Do,” her duet with husband Black, who wore this Versace jacket. The song topped Billboard’s country singles chart in 1999 and was named the Top Vocal Event of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.
