Upcycled Flag Book Workshop
With 2026 Hatch Show Print Visiting Artist Sarah Matthews
Transform authentic Hatch Show Print make-readies—the misprints and multi-layered prints made while preparing a poster for its final print run—into a one-of-a-kind sculptural flag book. Explore the creative intersection of print, collage, and bookbinding as you layer bold colors, typography, and patterns into a dynamic artist book. Learn the playful flag book structure, experiment with composition and embellishments, and create a unique book that celebrates the beauty of the historic letterpress printing happening right here in Nashville. While this workshop will focus on learning this fantastic book structure using special materials rarely made available, time may allow for hand-printing on the front or back of your book. Whether you’re new to book arts or an experienced maker, you’ll leave with a handcrafted artist book that’s entirely your own.
Cost: $150.

About Sarah Matthews
Sarah Matthews is a highly skilled printmaker and book artist with a background in art and business. She holds an MA in Art & the Book from the Corcoran College of Arts and Design at George Washington University, an MBA with a Marketing Concentration, and a BS in Sociology from Bowie State University. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are part of prestigious collections at institutions such as the National Museum of African American History & Culture Library, Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, George Washington University’s Gelman Library, University of Puget Sound, and Samford University. Mrs. Matthews is also a dedicated educator, teaching Artist Books at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and bookbinding and printmaking classes at various art centers and platforms.
