Join Hatch Show Print for an immersive experience working with hand-carved printing blocks pulled from the shop’s iconic Wall O’ Wonder.

Our expert educators will walk you through the process of creating a unique bandana by hand-inking and printing on fabric using iconic imagery cut into printing blocks by the designers at Hatch Show Print.

The designers are carving new blocks every week and also selecting 100-year-old blocks that are still in use in the shop in their work. A wide selection of these blocks finds their way into the classroom for special appearances only!

The Bandana-Making Process

Instruction will cover laying out the graphic elements and images selected among the array of printing blocks to create a traditionally symmetric pattern, or participants are welcome to explore how to bring the elements together with no set pattern.

Nearly 150 years of ‘getting inky’ informs the fun that takes place in our classroom space, and we hope that workshop participants, like the designers who work in the shop every day, use the printing blocks in new and delightful ways to create a visual story to carry along with them on their summer adventures.

Our staff are on hand to assist not only in the printmaking but to also work through bandana design ideas and offer creative ways to leverage the array of printing blocks that will be available to work with during this workshop, with consideration given to using color and creating a design that will look great on you and/or your favorite four-legged friend.

Time may allow for the creation of a small, simple graphic element using a print block material that is easy to cut and print, that can be incorporated into the overall design. That print block also becomes a keepsake to take home.

Once the design is complete, participants will print it by hand on paper, to see the completed design and make sure it matches what the mind’s eye envisioned, and if needed, tweaks can be made before moving to the fabric.

What You Will Get

Participants will leave with completed prints, bandanas, care instructions — a unique set of accessories, all made by hand at Hatch Show Print! No experience necessary. All materials are provided, including two blank bandanas (100 percent cotton), in-person instruction, and a handout with tips for creating and printing your design and follow-up care instructions for the bandanas. This program is open to people 18 years of age or older. Space is limited to 8 adults. $125 per person.
