Book Talk: Thomas Goldsmith on Earl Scruggs and Foggy Mountain Breakdown
Oct 11, 2019
Noon – 1 PM
Thomas Goldsmith, former Tennessean reporter and winner of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s 2004 Print Media Person of the Year award, will discuss his new book, Earl Scruggs and Foggy Mountain Breakdown: The Making of an American Classic, with museum historian Jay Orr. In addition to providing detailed information about the composition and influence of bluegrass instrumental “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” the book covers the formative years of bluegrass and includes valuable insight from interviews with Béla Fleck, Earl and Louise Scruggs, and Mac Wiseman. Banjo player John Hedgecoth, who worked with Bill Monroe in the 1970s and specialized in repairing fretted instruments at Gruhn Guitars, will discuss the five-string banjo and three-fingered picking style Scruggs popularized.
