A native of Irving, Texas, Liz Rose moved to Nashville in 1994, and once her children enrolled in school, she pursued a career in songwriting. Rose wrote hits for Gary Allan and Lee Ann Womack before she became a writing partner to Taylor Swift, collaborating frequently with her during the singer’s rise to stardom. Rose was named SESAC Songwriter of the Year in 2007 after co-writing seven songs on Swift’s debut album, including “Tim McGraw,” “Teardrops on My Guitar,” and “Picture to Burn.” Rose and Swift also wrote the #1 song “You Belong with Me” and the Grammy-winning “White Horse.” Rose’s profile as a songwriter rose further when she won the 2012 ACM trophy for Song of Year for “Crazy Girl,” recorded by the Eli Young Band. She co-wrote Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” which spent thirteen weeks at #1 on a Billboard country chart in 2015. “Girl Crush” won a Grammy for Best Country Song and a CMA nod for Song of the Year. In 2018, Rose supplied Carrie Underwood with “Cry Pretty” and Kenny Chesney with “Better Boat.” This interview will be illustrated with vintage photos, film, and recordings.
