Texas rancher George Strait brought western swing and honky-tonk back to the country music charts in the early 1980s. His success opened the door for the New Traditionalist movement, which became one of the decade’s dominant trends. Crisply attired in cowboy hat, western shirt, and jeans, Strait defined the image of the modern male country singer for the young “hat acts” who would follow him.
