Interview and Book Signing: The CMA Awards Vault with Deborah Evans Price and Robert Deaton

Author Deborah Evans Price will discuss her new book, The CMA Awards Vault, and the annual CMA Awards show with video director and CMA Awards Executive Producer Robert Deaton. The book documents the forty-three-year history of "country music's biggest night," from its beginnings as a one-hour radio broadcast to the elaborate three-hour television special it has become. Evans Price takes readers behind the scenes, sharing memorable moments and backstage stories. In addition to his work on the CMA Awards, Deaton and partner George Flanigen have created dozens of country music videos, including "Temporary Home" (Carrie Underwood) and "The Truth" (Jason Aldean). Film Screening
The documentary Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison explores Johnny Cash's landmark 1968 performance that resulted in one of the greatest live albums ever. Known for his excellent biographies of Cash and Eddy Arnold, scriptwriter Michael Streissguth co-produced the film with director Bestor Cram. Using photos, archival footage, and exclusive interviews, he charts Cash's path toward a concert that propelled him to superstardom and kept him at the center of political and social controversy. Family Program: Country Costume Design and the Williams Family Style
Family Program
Explore the stage wear of the Williams family and learn the basics of costume design in this hands-on workshop. Participants examine the clothing on display in our featured exhibit before designing their own costume on paper using fabric swatches, glitter, sequins, ribbons, and fringe. Led by Katy K, nationally recognized western-wear designer and owner of the Nashville boutique Katy K's Ranch Dressing. Offered in support of the exhibit Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy, Presented by SunTrust. Ages 5 to 15. Space is limited. No Reservations. Free. Film Screening: National Life Grand Ole Opry featuring Hank Williams Jr. and others (1965-66)
Film Screening
In 1965, the National Life and Accident Insurance Company sponsored the syndicated TV series National Life Grand Ole Opry. WSM-TV produced the shows (WSM Radio and WSM-TV were owned by the insurance company at the time), which featured performances by Opry members and invited guests. By 1967, the program had reached at least eighteen major cities, including Detroit, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and Houston. This screening features two episodes from the mid-1960s with performances by Bobby Bare, Grandpa Jones, Loretta Lynn, Connie Smith, Hank Williams Jr., and others. Williams, age sixteen in 1965, performs with his band, The Cheatin' Hearts. Screened in support of the exhibit Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy, Presented by SunTrust. 60 minutes. Free.
